Programs

OUR PROGRAMS:

ATOM (AGES 7 - 10 YEARS) TACKLE FOOTBALL

(Player turns 7, 8, 9 or 10 during the Calendar Year)

6 on 6 - Tackle Format

The goal of our Atom program is to provide a safe, positive and educational environment for players to learn the fundamentals of football.  The skill of tackling is broken down step by step following safe tackling guidelines so that players learn proper technique.  The goal of the Atom program is 100% Developmental.  Winning is a bonus, but it is NOT our main priority.

Atoms enjoy skills fun, an introduction to the game and lots of developmental opportunity in both practice and game formats.  Games are introduced in late August / early September and are played against other Atom teams in the CDMFA (Capital District Minor Football Association) region.

During the Pre-season (May & June), Atoms practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 7:30 or 8:00pm.  Once equipment has been distributed, all practices are full equipment.

There is NO football at any of our levels in July - Happy Holidays!

During the regular season, August to October, Atoms will practice from 6pm to 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (*NOTE: Coaches may opt to end practice earlier at this age level.  Please attend your Team Meeting, or see your Team Manager/Liaison for more information).   Games are always held on the weekend on either Saturday or Sunday.

PEEWEE (AGES 10 TO 12 YEARS)

Peewees are players that turn 11 or 12 during the Calendar Year

12 on 12 - Tackle Format (9 on 9 starting in 2020)

The Peewee program is designed to introduce players to the strategy, and teamwork involved in 12 on 12 Canadian football.  Practice continues to focus on skills, safe tackling, technique and fitness.  As the season unfolds, more emphasis is placed on learning the team Playbook (both Offensive Plays and Defensive Plays) and a great deal of vocabulary is introduced.  There is a 50/50 focus on player development vs. competitiveness at the Peewee level.

Peewees experience a much faster game with more “thinking” required by players on the field, and practice is designed to provide players with the ability to make these decisions on the field.   Special Teams are introduced at the Peewee level.  Players at the peewee level can range from barely 5 feet tall and 100lbs (soaking wet) to well over 6 feet and 250+ pounds.  Coaches will often adjust positions and play time based on such factors to maintain player safety at all times.  If there is a concern about your player’s field time, please see the Coaches.

During the Pre-season (May & June), Peewees practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8:00pm.  Once equipment has been distributed, all practices are full equipment.

There is NO football at any of our levels in July - Happy Holidays!

During the regular season, August to October, Peewees will practice from 6pm to 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.   Games are always held on the weekend on either Saturday or Sunday, and MAY include long weekends.  Play-offs can run as late as mid November.

BANTAMS (AGES 13 TO 15)

Bantams are Players that turn 13, 14 or 15 during the Calendar year and that are NOT starting high school during the football season.

12 on 12 - Tackle Format

The goal of our Bantam program is to provide a safe, fun and team environment where our players can further their skills, their game knowledge and their fitness levels while playing in a much more competitive environment.    Less time is spent on the fundamentals of the game and much more time is spent on the Playbook, reading the field and special teams.   There is a 90% focus on being competitive at this level.

Our Bantam program is the culmination of our Atom and Peewee programs, but NEW players are always welcome!  As there is less time spent on the fundamentals at this level, players are encouraged to join the Raiders Spring Training, to participate in other football training events (we can point you in the right direction) and to speak to the Coaches as additional training can be arranged - PLEASE keep in mind that our Coaches are volunteers.

All Bantam players are provided equal training and developmental opportunity at practice.  Game time is predicated on skill level, competitor, effort and attitude.  The goal of our field staff, and of the Raiders Football Club is player safety at all times.  If we believe that there is a chance a player could be injured - they will NOT play.  If you are concerned about play time, you are invited to speak to the Coaches.  If you are unhappy with the results, you are welcome to escalate your concerns.

During the Pre-season (May & June), Bantams practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8:00pm.  Once equipment has been distributed, all practices are full equipment.

There is NO football at any of our levels in July - Happy Holidays!

Duing the regular season, August to October, Bantams will practice from 6pm to 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.   Games are always held on the weekend on either Saturday or Sunday, and they are typically back to back of the Peewee level games.  Note that Bantams often play on long weekends.  Players are expected to arrive early for games - be sure that you are aware of how early YOUR Coach wants you.

Play-offs for Bantams begin at the end of October / start of November.  Play-offs are played in a single elimination format so you play until you lose.  Play-offs can run as late as the 3rd week in November depending on Tiering and performance.

FEMALE MIDGET FOOTBALL

     2019 Tier 1 Champions

Female Midgets (high school aged)

6 on 6 - Tackle Format

2019 marks the inaugural season for female midget football. The season started with a 2 day mini-camp to introduce the fundamentals of the sport. Practices for the female midgets vary in dates and times as scheduling indoor facilities are challenging, but the season starts in March and culminates in a Championship game on Mother's Day.

Games are held Friday evenings - check the calendar for times and locations.

MIDGETS (AGES 15 to 17) - Cancelled due to upcoming Football Canada Rule Changes.

Midgets are Players that turn 15, 16 or 17 during the Calendar year and that are NOT in their senior year.

12 on 12 - Tackle Format

The Raiders Midget program is currently suspended due to pending changes by Football Canada that will limit the amount of contact a player can have in a year.  These changes will challenge community and high school football as players will be unable to play both.  We are reviewing options and looking for alternatives for our Midget players.

The Midget program is a condensed season of approximately 6 games.  The season usually starts at the end of January and finishes near the end of April.  Playoffs may, or may not, occur.  Midget practice schedules vary greatly due to the requirement for indoor training facilities.  We try to offer reasonable practice times, locations as well as reasonable practice duration.

RAIDER'S SPRING TRAINING CAMP

The West Edmonton Raiders are proud to offer Spring Training focused on Strength, Conditioning, Footwork and Coordination.  Instructed by talented Edmonton Eskimos, this program is designed to allow athletes of all skill levels a chance to improve their fitness level, improve their technique, while meeting their potential team mates and having fun.

Peewee (turning 11 or 12 this calendar year) and Bantam (turning 13 - 15 this year without starting high school in fall) players are welcome to join us.

Space is limited & fills up fast.  Registration typically opens in January with Training beginning in February / March and ending at the end of April.  The regular season begins at the start of May.

2019 Spring Training Coaches: Calvin McCarty, Neil King, Darius Allen & Ryan King

FOOTBALL IS AFFORDABLE - Especially for a sport that runs from May to October!

The West Edmonton Raiders believes that ALL youth should have access to sport.  Football is a unique family with a place for every type of athlete - short, tall, fast, strong, awkward, and agile. We want to get players into the game, and to do so, we strive to make football affordable, friendly and fun.  The West Edmonton Raiders provides All mandatory equipment to it's players.  This includes Helmets, Chin Straps, Shoulder Pads, Practice Jerseys, Football Pants, Knee Pads, Girdles, Mouth Guards and Socks.  Players must provide their own Rubber Cleats and any optional equipment (gloves, visors, compression sleeves, etc.).

We aim to keep our registration fees at a level that is affordable to most.  We work with Kidsport, Jumpstart and also offer payment plans.  Our club subsidizes these fees through Fundraising, Corporate Sponsorship and the Volunteer efforts of EVERY Raider family.  Families that require special consideration are not overlooked.  We want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to play.
